Rangoon Burmese Kitchen: Reviews & Ratings
Food and drinks were fantastic! One of the best old-fashioned I have ever had (specifically with the Knob Creek Rye). We got the biryani and shan noodles with the brussels sprouts appetizer. The lamb in the biryani was some of the most tender I have ever had. I love Indian and Thai food and this restaurant is like an incredible amalgamation of the two in terms of color, textures, and spices. Come check this place out!
Food was good. Family style plating. Definitely get the Rangoon Fried Rice and pair it with a curry dish. We got the Shrimp and Eggplant Curry which was good, not salty, and mild in heat. The Nan Gyi Thoke was good too, it has coconut flavor; make sure to mix everything in before serving. The waitress who was helping us was awesome and made sure we were good. Parking is somewhat difficult as there are only metered street parking or park at an underground parking garage near by. I would come again to try the other dishes on the menu.
We drove to Chinatown for a little visit and were wanting to eat something a little “different” and saw this place. The decor is unique and inviting. We had a larger dinner planned so our party of 4ordered 1 salad and 2 larger dishes but still had leftovers. The salad was 5 stars. The noodle dish was a 3 stars. The biryani was 4 stars. The tea salad with cabbage was fresh and the texture of different kinds of crunch was fun and the flavor of the fermented tea leaves was fresh. The meats across the board (chicken in the curry noodles, lamb in the biryani) were all very tender. The rice noodle itself felt quite overcooked. The other thing that surprised us with the curry sauce and the biryani spicing is that they both were quite sweet (more than expected). We were yearning for a more earthy/umami/savory seasoning. However we were very entertained and happy to be lunching at this restaurant. Thank you!
Absolutely amazing! One of the best meals I’ve ever had in Honolulu. We had the samosa, platha and curry dip, tea salad, Myek noodles and eggplant curry. It all came out really quick and hot. The tea salad and platha / curry dip are not to be missed. One suggestion I would make is do not order all your food at once because they will bring it all at once. Order your appetizers and salads first and when you’re ready then order your main dish.
Amazing small restaurant in china town bigger then a hole in the wall and absolutely amazing. First time trying this style food so I asked for recommendations and the waitress did not hesitate or disappoint. She pointed out several of their best sellers and a few of her personal preference so o tried them all with a friend. Everything came out beautifully platted and tasting absolutely amazing. Highly recommend. Did fill up fast during the dinner time frame with a very chill crowd.
The Review A homey family restaurant located in the of Chinatown, Hawaii. The Burmese style and history are etched right into the walls through their beautiful art and design. The staff strikes that perfect balance—polite yet genuinely friendly. Entering at 7:40 p.m. on a Friday night, you’re greeted by the lively chatter of happy guests. With prices ranging from $18 to $40, I really enjoyed this quaint establishment.
Excellent food and great service! This is a great place to go for some delicious ethnic Burmese and good cocktails. The menu is great for lunch too. The atmosphere inside makes it easy to forget the slightly sketchy neighborhood outside. The salads here never miss. We tried the Rangoon Tea Leaf and the Mango salads - both were really good. The curries are also top notch. We've had the Rangoon curry with beef, and the pumpkin curry. Again both were great. My only knock against them is for the fritters, which were almost too hard to stab with a fork, and we're a slight jaw workout. Honestly if weren't for that inconsistency I'd have given them 5 stars. Lastly, the service was great. There was a mishap during one of my times there and the waitress handled it with aplomb.
I've been here a couple times now, and both I and my dining companions enjoyed what we had. I keep it simple with things like fried rice, while others in my group had curry and other dishes. The portions are large - basically it's family style with dishes being shareable. The cocktails were a bit mixed - I liked mine but opinion was split on others in terms of quality. I think this place gets forgotten sometimes because it's a little tucked away on the street, but I can definitely recommend it.
